Why TV Mounting Height Matters
After installing over 12,000 TVs across Las Vegas, the single most common question we hear is: "How high should I mount my TV?" It is a great question, because mounting height directly affects viewing comfort, neck strain, and how natural the picture looks in your space.
The short answer is that the center of your TV screen should sit at seated eye level, which for most people is about 42 inches from the floor. But the real answer depends on your room, your furniture, and how you watch. Let us break it down.
The General Rule: Center at Eye Level
When you are sitting on your couch or favorite chair, your eyes are typically around 42 inches off the ground. Mounting the center of your TV at that height means you look straight ahead rather than tilting your neck up or down. This is the sweet spot for extended viewing sessions, movie nights, and binge-watching without discomfort.
For a 55-inch TV, that means the bottom edge of the screen sits at roughly 28 inches from the floor. For a 65-inch TV, the bottom edge lands around 26 inches. For a 75-inch TV, closer to 24 inches. The larger the TV, the lower the bottom edge needs to be to keep the center at eye level.
Living Room Mounting Height
In a living room with a standard sofa (seat height around 17 to 18 inches), the 42-inch center rule works perfectly. If you have a lower-profile modern sectional, you may want to drop the center to 38 to 40 inches. If you have tall bar-height seating, raise the center to 46 to 48 inches.
A common mistake is mounting the TV too high because it "looks better on the wall." The TV might look nice as a piece of decor, but after 30 minutes of watching with your chin tilted up, you will feel it in your neck. Comfort always wins over aesthetics.
Bedroom Mounting Height
Bedrooms are different because most people watch TV while reclined or propped up against pillows. In this position, your eye level is significantly lower and your natural gaze angles slightly upward. We recommend mounting the center of a bedroom TV between 48 and 55 inches from the floor.
A tilting mount is practically essential in bedrooms. It lets you angle the screen downward toward the bed, eliminating glare and giving you a perfect viewing angle whether you are sitting up or lying down. We install tilting mounts in bedrooms on about 90 percent of our jobs.
Above the Fireplace: Proceed with Caution
Mounting a TV above the fireplace is one of the most requested installations, and also one of the most debated. The mantel typically sits 48 to 54 inches from the floor, which puts the TV center at 60 to 70 inches, well above the recommended eye level.
If you are set on mounting above the fireplace, a full-motion mount that pulls out and tilts down is non-negotiable. This lets you angle the screen toward seating and significantly reduces neck strain. We also recommend keeping the TV as close to the mantel as possible rather than centering it on the wall above.
Heat is the other concern. If you have a gas or wood-burning fireplace that you actually use, make sure the area above the mantel does not exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit when the fire is going. We carry an infrared thermometer on every job and will advise you honestly if the location is safe for your TV.
Viewing Distance and Screen Size
Mounting height and viewing distance go hand in hand. Here is a quick reference for optimal viewing distance based on TV size: 55-inch TV at 7 to 9 feet, 65-inch TV at 8 to 11 feet, 75-inch TV at 9 to 12 feet, and 85-inch TV at 10 to 14 feet. If you are sitting closer than these ranges, a lower mount height helps. Farther away, a slightly higher mount is acceptable.
